Hyperuricemia and its complications are severe risks to human health. Dietary intervention is considered an essential part of the management of hyperuricemia. Studies have reported that the intake of antioxidants has a positive effect on hyperuricemia. Here, we collected data from 8761 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for this analysis. Daily intakes of vitamins A, C, and E; manganese; selenium; and zinc were calculated as the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI). The participants were divided into four groups (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) according to the CDAI. Univariate analysis was used to assess the association of covariates with hyperuricemia. The association between the CDAI and hyperuricemia was evaluated using multinomial logistic regression, and its stability was determined by stratified analysis. Our results revealed that the CDAI has a significant negative association with hyperuricemia (Q2: 0.81 (0.69, 0.95); Q3: 0.75 (0.62, 0.90); Q4: 0.65 (0.51, 0.82); P < 0.01). The results of stratified analysis emphasize that this association between CDAI and hyperuricemia is stable. In conclusion, this study suggested a negative association between the CDAI and hyperuricemia.

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) regulates neuronal morphology, synaptic growth and inflammation; however, its involvement in spinal cord injury (SCI) remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of FGF23 on neuronal apoptosis, inflammation and locomotion recovery, as well as its underlying mechanism in experimental SCI models. Primary rat neurons were stimulated with H2O2 to establish an in vitro model of SCI and were then transfected with an FGF23 overexpression (oeFGF23) or short hairpin RNA (shFGF23) adenovirus-associated virus and treated with or without LY294002 (a PI3K/AKT inhibitor). Subsequently, an SCI rat model was constructed, followed by treatment with oeFGF23, LY294002 or a combination of the two. FGF23 overexpression (oeFGF23 vs. oeNC) decreased the cell apoptotic rate and cleaved-caspase3 expression, but increased Bcl-2 expression in H2O2-stimulated neurons, whereas shFGF23 transfection (shFGF23 vs. shNC) exhibited the opposite effect (all P<0.05). Furthermore, FGF23 overexpression (oeFGF23 vs. oeNC) could activate the PI3K/AKT signalling pathway, whereas treatment with the PI3K/AKT inhibitor (LY294002) (oeFGF23 + LY294002 vs. LY294002) attenuated these effects in H2O2-stimulated neurons (all P<0.05). In SCI model rats, FGF23 overexpression (oeFGF23 vs. oeNC) reduced the laceration and inflammatory cell infiltration in injured tissue, decreased TNF-α and IL-1ß levels, and improved locomotion recovery (all P<0.05); these effects were attenuated by additional administration of LY294002 (oeFGF23 + LY294002 vs. LY294002) (all P<0.05). In conclusion, FGF23 alleviated neuronal apoptosis and inflammation, and promoted locomotion recovery via activation of the PI3K/AKT signalling pathway in SCI, indicating its potential as a treatment option for SCI; however, further studies are warranted for validation.

Bacillus Calmette - Guerin (BCG) is an immune regulator that can enhance hippocampal synaptic plasticity in rats; however, it is unclear whether it can improve synaptic function in a mouse model with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We hypothesized that BCG plays a protective role in AD mice and investigated its effect on dendritic morphology. The results obtained show that BCG immunization significantly increases dendritic complexity, as indicated by the increased number of dendritic intersections and branch points, as well as the increase in the fractal dimension. Furthermore, the number of primary neurites and dendritic length also increased following BCG immunization, which increased the number of spines and promoted maturation. IFN-γ and IL-4 levels increased, while TNF-α levels decreased following BCG immunization; expression levels of p-JAK2, P-STAT3, SYN, and PSD-95 also increased. Therefore, this study demonstrates that BCG immunization in APP/PS1 mice mitigated hippocampal dendritic spine pathology, especially after the third round of immunization. This effect could possibly be attributed to; changes in dendritic arborization and spine morphology or increases in SYN and PSD-95 expression levels. It could also be related to mechanisms of BCG-induced increases in IFN-γ or IL-4/JAK2/STAT3 levels.


BCG immunization in a mouse model for Alzheimer's disease significantly increased dendritic complexity, as indicated by an increase in the number of dendritic intersections and branch points, as well as an increase in the fractal dimension of hippocampal CA1 neurons.

BACKGROUND: Candida auris is an opportunistic pathogen with multiple drug resistance. Therefore, researchers conducted a meta-analysis to review PCR's ability to diagnose Candida auris to promote the development of accurate Candida auris diagnosis. METHODS: Researchers systematically retrieved relevant articles from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science. Then, researchers extracted the key data required for the study from the selected articles. Meta-DiSc 1.4 was used for the statistical analysis. RevMan 5.3 was employed to assess the quality of the included literature. A funnel plot can appraise whether the included articles have publication bias. RESULTS: Five articles were included in the study. The results suggest that the pooled sensitivity and pooled specificity were 0.94 (95% CI: 0.92 - 0.95) and 0.99 (95% CI: 0.99 - 0.99), respectively. The positive and negative likelyhood ratios were 100.94 (95% CI: 47.51 - 214.47) and 0.07 (95% CI: 0.05 - 0.10), respectively. The diagnostic odds ratio was 1,814.70 (95% CI: 717.30 - 4,591.04), and the area under the SROC curve was 0.9935. Deek's funnel plot indicated that there was no publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the analysis indicate that PCR can become a valuable technique for the clinical diagnosis of Candida auris due to its excellent performance.

COVID-19 is a serious infectious disease that has recently swept the world, and research on its causative virus, SARS-CoV-2, remains insufficient. Therefore, this study uses bioinformatics analysis techniques to explore the human digestive tract diseases that may be caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. The gene expression profile data set, numbered GSE149312, is from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and is divided into a 24-h group and a 60-h group. R software is used to analyze and screen out differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and then gene ontology (GO) term and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses are performed. In KEGG, the pathway of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease exists in both the 24-h group and 60-h group. STRING is used to establish a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and Cytoscape is then used to visualize the PPI and define the top 12 genes of the node as the hub genes. Through verification, nine statistically significant hub genes are identified: AKT1, TIMP1, NOTCH, CCNA2, RRM2, TTK, BUB1B, KIF20A, and PLK1. In conclusion, the results of this study can provide a certain direction and basis for follow-up studies of SARS-CoV-2 infection of the human digestive tract and provide new insights for the prevention and treatment of diseases caused by SARS-CoV-2.
